St Mirren 1 - 3 Rangers

Kyle Lafferty celebrates with team-mate Steven Davis

Highlights - St Mirren 1-3 Rangers

By Clive Lindsay

Substitute Kyle Lafferty inspired Rangers to a win over St Mirren that restores the Glasgow side's one-point lead at the top of the table.

Lafferty's flick-on was headed into his own net by Marc McAusland after 47 minutes and the forward set up Steven Naismith for a tap-in 11 minutes later.

Rangers' top scorer, Kenny Miller, pounced on a McAusland mistake to fire the third after 68 minutes.

Michael Higdon replied from the penalty spot after Steven Davis handled.

But the Buddies could not salvage a point and remain on the bottom of the Scottish Premier League while Rangers leapfrog city rivals Celtic at the top.

Rangers had switched to their more attacking domestic formation, with winger Vladimir Weiss passing a fitness test to replace Kirk Broadfoot.

St Mirren manager Danny Lennon sought to pack the midfield, with Hugh Murray coming in for Higdon, who has been struggling with a knock.

But it was the Buddies who provided the early threat, with on-loan Celtic forward Paul McGowan wriggling clear inside the box but sending his mis-hit 16-yard drive wide.

Striker Gareth Wardlaw found himself with space inside the Rangers penalty box but failed to hit the target with his header from 12 yards.

St Mirren had the ball in the net when Aaron Mooy pounced after Allan McGregor dropped a Jure Travner cross, but it was ruled out because Wardlaw had forced the goalkeeper into the fumble with a vigorous barge.

Rangers started to dominate possession and up the tempo, with Weiss leading the probing and winning a free-kick from which the visitors came close to breaking the deadlock after 28 minutes.

Steven Davis's 22-yard drive clattered the crossbar before coming off goalkeeper Craig Samson's hand and deflecting wide of the post.

Samson was fortunate a minute before half time when it looked like Rangers had taken the lead.

The goalkeeper seemed to miss his punch when trying to prevent a Weiss corner reaching the head of Steven Naismith eight yards from goal, but referee Craig Thomson ruled out the forward's effort, seemingly for a foul.

Rangers withdrew Weiss, who had been booked for an angry push on David van Zanten, at half-time and on came forward Lafferty.

It took the Northern Ireland international two minutes to help Rangers break the deadlock after their first sustained spell of intense pressure on the home defence.

He headed on a Davis cross and McAusland directed it into the far top corner from eight yards.

Buddies boss Lennon responded with the withdrawal of Mooy and the introduction of striker Higdon.

However, the Paisley side fell further behind and Lafferty was again involved.

Davis released the striker down the left and he rolled the ball into the six-yard box for Naismith to flick home the winner for his eighth goal of the season.

Another McAusland mistake secured Rangers' win when he attempted to control a back header from John Potter but was robbed by Miller, who steered his drive past the exposed Samson.

The Buddies were unlucky not to reply immediately when Madjid Bougherra's attempted clearance struck the inside of the post and Higdon's low drive on the rebound looked to be heading in via a deflection off Sasa Papac.

However, McGregor showed his Scotland international form to claw the ball off the goal-line.

They did get the goal their determination deserved after 75 minutes when a Travner cross struck Davis's hand and Higdon tucked away the penalty kick.

Higdon squandered a chance to give Rangers a more nervous finale when he skied his drive from 14 yards after fine set-up play by Travner.
